about THAT BOX

It all started with a transporting failure in June 2022: a wooden box sent from Taipei to Zurich containing an artwork failed to catch its exhibition opening. It was kept at the Swiss customs waiting for further declaration because the customs couldn't figure out what was inside exactly. (an unknown and unidentified object). After submitting lots of documents, the box finally arrived, yet the exhibition was over. Since then, the box remained unopened and has been wandering from one house to another, going through several people's hands, ending up in the hallway of an apartment in Düsseldorf, Germany till today.

What is inside the box?
What is the value of an art piece?
What kind of traces does a box leave behind?
What is considered unidentified, when you cross the border?
What is the cost for crossing border?
What needs to be proved for an object, in order to be “passed” and to arrive at its destination?

Within the frame of the Gamut Labyrinth, nine artists from diverse disciplines/regions are invited to create artworks based on the description, narration and image of this box and its great journey. As part of the project, the wooden box will also travel back and exhibit at Wartsaal Wipkingen, where it was supposed to be opened and displayed one year ago.

Dear Santorini,

It‘s been a year since we separated. How are you doing?

I know that you have always been a low-profile person. You are used to looking back to confirm your position in the world when you are alone, and you know how to let the unfamiliar environment build a safe barrier for you.

Through friends around you, I heard that you had moved and crossed borders several times, met some people, and walked into each other's lives. I'm just a bit worried that when the alarm bell rings, will it make you unsure of how to think of home?

I’m not sure if the southern sun can reach where you are, but I hope the dry air will make the rash on your butt better, and maybe the difference in language will make you fall in love with singing again.

I picture you in such a way, but there is no other way to confirm whether this is the distance you want. Please don‘t mind when we put our eyes on you. This is how we could try to remember you.

I know your birthday has just passed. So! Happy birthday, I hope you are all well.
Greetings from the distant land.
